My opinion on what scientific presentation should look like
Throughout my career, I have given several oral presentations (standing in front of an audience, showing slides, and talking through my research) and I have also attended many more. I won’t claim to be a master presenter; I still sometimes stumble over my ideas, struggle to explain things clearly, and my slides are often far from perfect. Even so, I’ve learned to sense when a presentation is well thought-out and when it isn’t. Here, I want to share my observations and thoughts, drawn from my experience on both sides of the podium: as an audience and as a speaker.
As an audience
I want to start with sharing my thoughts and experience as an audience. If we can recognize the goods and the bads of a presentation as an audience, we can use that to improve our own presentation as a presenter. That’s why we start with this side of the podium first.
